Designed by Artist & Nomad in collaboration with the artisans of the Liberty Cooperative in Tamelsouht outside of Marrakech. Today, the artisans of Tamelsouht make a diverse range of products that are primarily sold to middlemen the Marrakech medina.. In attempt to break out of their dependency on Marrakech resellers, these artisans have come together to ensure that they could generate the prices they need to support themselves and their business. The cooperative specifically chose the word liberty to reflect their independence as artisans.
This striped wool blanket is called a Bitannia. Bitannias by Cooperative Liberty are made on a horizontal loom using thick wefts of handspun wool. The warp is a white cotton/polly blend for durablity. They are thick and soft enough to be used as a beautiful, warm cover, but also durable enough to be used as a large rug. The wool is locally sourced and all natural wool colors. The warp used for the current designs contains a cotton/poly white thread for the fringe. Special orders will use natural wool for the warp/fringe.
